After the First World War, Claude Monet offered the French State a series of canvases as a congratulation for the victory. The artist simply asked that they should be placed in a space that was suitable for their conservation. For this, the old building of the Orangerie was destined.
This building was built in 1853 and its initial mission was to serve as a greenhouse for oranges, hence its name. Luminous and well ventilated, this building had, at the discretion of Monet, the perfect conditions to show off its wide collection of canvases called "Les Nymphéas" (The Water Lilies), a collection that will occupy, to this day, a large part of the building.
Subsequently, the museum has been acquiring artworks of impressionist and post-impressionist authors thanks to the collections of Paul Guillaume and Jean Walter composed by artists such as Cézanne, Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso or Renoir among many other exponents of the Impressionist movement.
The Musée de l'Orangerie is a unique space and a must for all lovers of this technique inspired by the French painter Claude Monet.
