At the beginning of the Sant' Angelo Castle, 135 a.c, was knowed as the familiar mausoleum of Hadrian, who died two years later, the building was designed with a circular ground plan,it was built with Travertino stone in a square base of marble.
It became a military fortress and palace with big walls, where Popes could access using a passage which connected the Vatican City with the castle in case of attack during the war.
In 590 a.c. there was a plague epidemic in Rome. In order to separate the plague of the city there was a procession in which the Pope Gregorio I took part. When the Pope was next to the mausoleum of Adriano, he had a vision of the St. Michael Archangel in the top of the castle sheathing his sword, meaning this the end of the plague.
In order to commemorate the apparition of the archangel and the disappearence of the plague, the statue was build in the top of the construction. For this reason, the building changed its name to Sant' Angelo Castle.
